Lock it up!

Wednesday, February 2, 2011

In the time we've lived in our house there's been one major annoyance for Loren...the door to the garage. Our garage isn't attached, is always locked, and we forget our keys inside the house a lot. So, when trying to run out to the garage to grab something quick it got to be a little frustrating to be out in the rain (most of the time) with no key. Enter this -

The Kwikset Electronic Deadbolt. We ordered this bad mamma-jamma about a week ago and it arrived just in time for the weekend. Loren couldn't wait to install it. Here's what we started with; just a regular ol' deadbolt and doorknob lock.

First thing to do is remove the existing deadbolt. Then you line up the keypad and this bracket piece on the back of the door. You have to make sure to feed this cable looking piece through to the back. Once these pieces are screwed in the installation is halfway done!

Then you plug the cable piece into this chip, install the batteries, and screw this piece down.

The last step is just to put the cover on in the back and then make sure the front keypad is straight.

Loren installed it in about 20 minutes and we've been loving it every since! The lock also comes with really easy instructions for programming your personal code. The deadbolt shade of silver is a little off compared to our doorknob but I'm sure I could fix that with some paint...or I might decide not to care since it's the garage! Either way, I'm really happy we installed it. It's much nicer than fumbling around with the key in the rain, plus, I LOVE pushing buttons! Anyone else have an electronic deadbolt? I'm a little obsessed with it now and just want to tell everyone about them!

  1. Hi! I just started reading your blog and am enjoying it. I just had to share that my father-in-law installed one similar to this on our front door as our housewarming gift and we LOVE it. It's great to never need a key to go in and out. Anyway, congrats - it's such a time saver!
