And the chair rail bites the dust! - Part 1

Monday, October 25, 2010

Over the weekend I was bored and trying to think of something to do, Loren suggested that I tackle a project in the guest bedroom. The guest room has this chair rail that goes all around the room and it's disgusting. Plus, as part of my end-of-year to do list I want to make a headboard and it's going to work out so well if there's a big ol' rail in the middle of the wall. I figured it was now or never so I decided to tackle it. Here's a peak at the room before I got started:

I wasn't really sure how it was attached to the wall so I had no idea what I was getting myself into. To start I took a hammer and flathead screwdriver and tried to pry a piece off the wall. It came off so easy! I couldn't believe it! Turns out that they used some sort of nail to attach the wood to the wall. Anyway, I managed to get the rest of the trim off only using the hammer.

I finished taking all the trim off in about 10 minutes. The wall wasn't really damaged; just nail holes to be filled. But the real treat was the BRIGHT green paint stripe that had been covered by the chair rail...pretty huh?! I got busy filling the nail holes and Loren sanded and scraped off the excess paint that had accumulated along the edge of the rail.

Now we're all set to paint. Luckily I have some leftover paint so I'm hoping that I can just paint this new area and we'll be good to go. I'll be back to share the finished results tomorrow or Wednesday.
